Glen T. Blake, moved his family from Colorado to Richfield. He started a Maytag retail sales outlet and also an electrical wholesale supply outlet. Most of his Maytag sales were made on the road out of the back of a Model T Ford pickup. He sold lots of gasoline engine washers throughout southern Utah. It was very common to come home after a trip to Boulder or Escalante and have no washers and no money. But he had traded for lots of other things.

As time went on, the wholesale business increased and he and my grandmother found it necessary to split the retail from the wholesale end of the business. Dale Waters, whose sons now own and operate Central Electric, took over the wholesale business and Grandpa expanded his electrical business.

My grandparents passed away in 1968 and my father took over the business. In 1996 he retired and now it’s my turn. Our business has changed a lot with the times. Because of the increasing rise in labor prices and the availability of commodities, some of the things we used to service and sell have been discontinued. As a teenager I would service small appliances such as toasters, irons and mixers. We have always serviced and sold pumps of all shapes and sizes.

We were in the motor rewind business for over 40 years but it became unprofitable. However we still sell any and all types of electric motors. We have also been in the refrigeration business for as long as I can remember sometimes it is very difficult to stay on top of this business because of the ozone depletion issue and the rising cost to do refrigeration, but we have all of the up-to-date equipment necessary to comply with the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and we strive to be efficient in all aspects of refrigeration and air conditioning.

Blake Electric has been an electrical contracting firm for 80 years and specializes in house wiring and small commercial jobs. We love Richfield and all the people here. We have been here our whole lives, it’s a great place to raise kids and older kids my wife says.
